“Nice that something is finally working again”

Waltrop breathes a sigh of relief. This feeling was conveyed by the guests at the picnic organized by the cultural office on Sunday (20 June) at the foot of the gauge tower. You just looked into happy faces.

“Finally we’re allowed to go again”, was the tenor of the picnic visitors at the foot of the gauge tower on Sunday (June 20th). To see other people, to hear them, to wave to them or to have a chat at the next table; The 215 picnickers enjoyed that very much.

In a WhatsApp group, Veronika Schröder-Norosinski asked friends: “Does everyone bring what they want?” Ultimately, the decision was made: no. “We agreed on a rustic meal.” So meat sausage, the coveted Klöcker meatballs, sausages, cucumbers and rolls as well as strawberries and muffins came to the table.

Klaus-Gerd Tigges points to a cooler bag that he once bought in Holland. “It’s perfect: all the crockery plus tablecloth is in here on the side. And behind that the large cooling compartment. ”When Margit Tigges asks:“ What do you want? Cloth or paper napkins? “, The vote is clear: If so, then yes – the blue and white checkered ones should be made of cloth. The sextet pays attention to details: under the tin with the meatballs there is a napkin that says “Star cuisine”. The group of six, who have a subscription and regularly attend the cultural events in Waltrop, had actually expected another couple. “But you have decided on a short trip to the Eifel. Your own fault, ”says Klaus-Gerd Tigges and laughs.

There is coffee – but also iced Hugo

Of course, the fun group has coffee in thermos flasks with them, but the drinks cooler is enthroned in the middle of the table. Inside: ice-cold Hugo. The six toast cheerfully and look forward to their lives.

Two tables away, Leon has taken a seat in a mini deck chair. Mama Lisa, who lives with her family in Brambauer, had read about the picnic series on Facebook. “Then we just signed up and now that we are here, it’s just wonderful.”

Daughter Mia (7), who has also made herself comfortable in a deck chair, says: “The best thing is that Aunt Steffi and Uncle Domi are here.” Mama Lisa explains: “This is the first time we have been together in months do something. ”She smiles at everyone, friends and family smile back.

Best conditions with wind and clouds

Many a visitor feared that the picnic would be held because of the thunderstorm on Sunday night. But in the end, the conditions couldn’t have been nicer: A light wind was blowing on the heap, and clouds kept pushing in front of the sun. The conditions were perfect. A quartet from Waltrop saw it that way too, and even dragged a parasol with them onto the dump. Geert Dirks, Andreas and Susanne Schroer as well as Silvia Batke beamed at each other and remarked with great satisfaction: “Finally something is happening again.”

Shortly before 12 noon, all tables are occupied, and the visitors listen to Anika Troska singing. Meanwhile, Claudia Schänzer and Christine Erlemann from the cultural office are sitting at the entrance. They have also brought a little picnic with them – only water is bubbling in their mugs instead of Hugo.

The two organizers – and Sören Backhove – are beaming with the visitors. “It’s a nice day for us. Finally something is working again. It was terrible in the past few months to have to cancel all events, ”says Claudia Schänzer. At this moment a visitor comes by and gives a thumbs up. He doesn’t say much, but what he says leaves the women even happier: “Well organized,” he says.

It continues on July 18th

The picnic at the foot of the gauge tower was the start of a series: And the response is great: the picnic in Moselbachpark in the afternoon and evening hours of July 18 is even completely sold out, and there are still some places available for the children’s picnic in the morning. The appointment at the canal on August 15 is already 70 percent booked out.
