Nicaragua’s Supreme Court disqualifies imprisoned lawyer denouncing link between President Magistrate and drug trafficker

The Supreme Court of Justice, controlled by the Daniel Ortega regime, definitively disqualified imprisoned lawyer José Manuel Urbina Lara, who denounced an alleged link between President Magistrate Alba Luz Ramos and a drug trafficker.

Urbina Lara, considered a political prisoner by human rights organizations, becomes the twenty-seventh private jurist to practice law for life in Nicaragua so far in May.

In its resolution, the Supreme Court explained that they gave rise to “the news programs followed against” Urbina Lara, “of which merit has been made”, related to alleged collection of fees and then not fulfilling the functions for which he had been hired.

Urbina Lara, imprisoned since January 2021, posted on Facebook before his arrest for a traffic accident that Nicaraguan businessman Henry Fariña, sentenced in 2012 to 30 years in prison for drug trafficking and other crimes, is the son-in-law of the president of the Supreme, Alba Luz Ramos.

Cabral had presented a recital in Guatemala and was being driven by Fariña to the airport that serves the country’s capital when the armed attack took place, allegedly ordered by the Costa Rican Alejandro Jiménez, alias El Palidejo, in revenge for the theft of a shipment of drugs.

According to the Nicaraguan Prosecutor’s Office, Fariña and El Palidejo led an international drug trafficking network that was in charge of taking drugs from Costa Rica to Guatemala from the Colombian group Los Fresas, whose final destination was the Mexican gang of Los Charros, linked to the Family. Michoacana.

Fariña was arrested on March 30, 2012 at the Managua International Airport, and was found guilty of drug trafficking and other crimes on September 27 of that year.

In its resolution, the Court decided to sanction Urbina Lara “with definitive suspension from the practice of the professions of lawyer and notary public, from the notification of this judgment.”

In addition, he declared null and void his legal title and registered notary public before the Supreme Court.

Likewise, he warned Urbina Lara, despite the fact that he is in prison, “that he must send to the Secretariat of the Supreme Court of Justice, within 24 hours, under penalty of law, if he does not do so, the titles of lawyer and public notary , the protocols that he carried out during the five-year periods that he was authorized to label, stamp and card.

Nicaragua has been going through a political and social crisis since April 2018, which has worsened after the controversial general elections of November 7, 2021, in which Ortega was re-elected for a fifth term, fourth in a row and second along with his wife, Rosario Murillo. , as vice president, with her main contenders in prison or in exile.
