He money was detected in two out of three barrels traveling in the tub of a Van double cabin, plate of Managua, in the municipality of San Lorenzo, department of Boaco, center of Nicaragua, the second head of the Directorate of Judicial Aid, Victoriano Ruiz, said in a statement to the media.
In total, 173 packages were hidden inside the barrels containing $ 4.7 million that, by applying the Scintrex technique, they tested positive cocaine, he specified.
The detainee, who was the companion in the Van, was identified as Marlon de Jesús Sequeira Calero, 49, he said.
The National Police did not specify the name of the owner of the vehicle.
The Scintrex technique was applied to the money and to the seized truck, both with positive results for cocaine, said the police chief.
He Nicaraguan detainee will be forwarded to the competent authorities for the prosecution of his case.
Among the evidence that the National Police will provide will be the seized money, the van in which it was mobilized and the results of the test of cocaine.
Last week, authorities seized $ 541,400 in a handcrafted, hidden compartment in the trunk of a car at the El Guasale border post, which Nicaragua shares with Honduras, and detained one person.
On June 2, authorities seized $ 392,000 from two boats stranded in the Nicaraguan Pacific, but did not arrest any suspects.
On March 15, the police found $ 880,000 in a van without plates near Managua, and 12 days later they found $ 299,700 inside abandoned plastic drums in a rural community in the department of Chinandega (northwest). In both cases there were also no detainees.
In total, since mid-March last to date, authorities have seized $ 6.8 million, and have only detained two suspects.
The Nicaraguan authorities execute a strategy they call “Containment Wall”, which aims to prevent the circulation of drugs or money linked to drug trafficking in population centers, for which they maintain “close cooperation ties” with the countries of the region , as well as the United States, Mexico and Russia.
Nicaragua is geographically located in a corridor of high drug trafficking that occurs in South America and then is transferred to North America, where mainly the Mexican cartels operate and the main consumers reside.
