“With all our love, always together and always beyond (…). Blessed be the perpetual flame that shines from the deep love of our peoples. Blessed and praised be the God of all victories,” they concluded.
The standard-bearer of the largest opposition coalition in Venezuela, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutiacontinues to gain international support, after the United States, Argentina, Uruguay, Ecuador, Peru, Panama and Costa Rica recognized him as the winner of the presidential elections on July 28, contrary to the announcement by the CNE that proclaimed the Venezuelan head of state, Nicolás Maduro, as re-elected president.
In contrast to most countries in the Americas, Colombia, Brazil and Mexico – whose governments are allies or close to Maduro – stated in a joint statement that “electoral disputes” must be resolved through “institutional” means and that the principle of popular sovereignty must be respected through “impartial verification of the results.”
This week, Maduro’s government ordered the withdrawal of its ambassadors from Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay and expelled the diplomatic missions of those countries from Venezuelan territory.
On Friday, the CNE ratified Maduro as the winner of the race with 51.95% of the votes, compared to 43.18% of support obtained by the opposition candidate González Urrutia, with 96.87% of the votes counted, which the institution has not published to date. EFE
