At noon this Tuesday, Nicaragua received a new donation from Canada, through the Covax mechanism, 326,400 AstraZeneca doses. Likewise, almost a million doses of Sovereign 2 and Abdala were received from Cuba, the designated vice president, Rosario Murillo, briefly reported.
“This donation of 326,400 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines received through the Covax Mechanism meets the principles of equity and solidarity. Canada shows its support with the Nicaraguan population, ”the PAHO / WHO Nicaragua regional office shared on Twitter.
So far, the Government of Spain has been the main donor of the AstraZeneca vaccine, with a total of 1.7 million doses delivered between August and October of this year.

The reception of this new batch of AstraZeneca was in charge of the Minister of Health, Martha Reyes; the PAHO / WHO representative, Ana Solís Treasure; the Secretary General of the Ministry of Health, Carlos Sáenz, and the representative of UNICEF in Nicaragua, Antero Almeida de Pina.

Murillo does not provide further details
Regarding the Cuban vaccines Soberana and Abdala, Murillo only mentioned that the amount received is to complete the vaccination and immunization scheme for the population between 2 and 17 years of age. However, he did not provide further details about the second or third dose.
“From Cuba we received almost a million doses of Soberana 2 and Abdala to contemplate the vaccination scheme for the population group from 2 to 17 years old,” was the only thing Murillo said during his customary address to the official media.

In previous statements, the spokeswoman for Daniel Ortega’s regime pointed out that by the end of this year Nicaragua will have received a total of seven million doses of the Cuban vaccines Soberana 2, Soberana Plus and Abdala.
OPS schedules another delivery
Currently, the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health is vaccinating the population from 2 years of age onwards against covid-19, including the second and third doses, the latter for the elderly.
As a way to support the streamlining of this process, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is scheduled to donate, through Covax, 134,400 more doses of AstraZeneca, which will be arriving on Saturday, November 13.
According to PAHO data, Nicaragua has applied more than 1.6 million anticovid doses, of which 494,411 people have completed the vaccination schedule.
