Madrid. The Nicaraguan Ministry of the Interior ordered the cancellation of another 15 NGOs this Tuesday, including the Duo Guardabarranco Foundation, created to keep alive the memory of Katia and Salvador Cardenal, two important singer-songwriters of the Nueva Canción who achieved fame in the early 1980s. .

The Guardabarranco Duo was part of the musical movement of the New Latin American Song, linked to leftist activism and comprising artists such as the Argentine Mercedes Sosa, the Chilean Víctor Jara, the Mexican Amparo Ochoa or the Cuban Carlos Puebla.

According to the official newspaper ‘La Gaceta’, the government led by Daniel Ortega canceled the legal personality of the Dúo Guardabarranco Foundation for not having reported the financial statements of the NGO between 2017 and 2023.

Specifically, nine of the NGOs were canceled for non-compliance with laws – some of them of a religious nature – while the rest for “voluntary dissolution of their members”, according to the newspaper ‘La Prensa’.

Ortega’s government deprived dissidents of nationality, expelled ambassadors from the country and closed thousands of national and international NGOs, as well as media outlets and religious organizations.
