The Government of Nicaragua announced this Saturday the breaking of “all diplomatic relations” with Ecuador after the assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito by the Ecuadorian police forces, in order to arrest the former Ecuadorian vice president, Jorge Glas, whom the president Mexican, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, had granted diplomatic asylum.
“In the face of the unusual and reprehensible action carried out this morning in Quito, by forces that should protect the order and security of Ecuadorian citizens and their lives,” we express “our forceful, emphatic and irrevocable rejection, which we convert into our sovereign decision to break all diplomatic relations with the Ecuadorian Government,” they highlight from Managua.
«On September 1, 2020 we had withdrawn our Embassy in Quito and with this statement we formalized the severing of all diplomatic relations. Our solidarity and support, in any legal action that may arise from this, to the president and Government of Mexico, Don Andrés Manuel López Obrador,” the statement concludes.
Likewise, the Nicaraguan Government expressed its “warm and consistent consideration for the beloved Ecuadorian people, who live in times of inconceivable brutality,” as well as its “adherence to international law and the conventions that govern civilized relations between States and Governments of the world.”
- The National Police of Ecuador stormed the Mexican Embassy in Quito this Friday night and detained the former Ecuadorian vice president, to whom Andrés Manuel López Obrador granted diplomatic asylum.
- It is reported that after being transferred early this Saturday from the headquarters of the Flagrancy Unit, Glas has been sent to the maximum security prison of La Roca, located near Guayaquil. For his part, the former president of Ecuador Rafael Correa has denounced that Glas was physically attacked.
- During the assault, the acting ambassador and head of the Foreign Ministry and Political Affairs of the Mexican Embassy in Quito, Roberto Canseco, was pushed to the ground by the agents. In addition, several diplomats were injured.
- In this context, the Government of Mexico announced the breaking of diplomatic relations with Ecuador, denouncing “the flagrant violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the injuries suffered by Mexican diplomatic personnel in Ecuador.”
