Niantic, the developer behind Pokémon Go, has revealed that users contributed to the creation of the AI model. This large-scale geospatial model, as it is called, is designed to transcend the physical world.
It has used player data in a similar way to how ChatGPT uses large amounts of text, according to one blog post by Niantic. Except, instead of learning a language, it will model it instead “enabling computers not only to see and understand physical spaces, but also to interact with them in new ways, which is an integral part of AR glasses and beyond away, including robots, content creation, and autonomous systems.”
Although it may only be designed for smart glasses, robots and similar fields, some are concerned that it could be used for military applications. In fact, Niantic has no plans to use the model for such purposes now, and instead wants to create a model to go over the world.
