NHSO prepares to adjust the “IPV polio” vaccination to 2 doses to care for all newborn Thai children.

The NHSO Board has considered and approved. “Proposal to expand the scope of benefits Injectable Polio Vaccine (IPV) service” from 1 shot to 2 shots, with plans to procure additional IPV vaccines in fiscal year 2024.

Recently, the Department of Disease Control has proposed expanding the scope of the IPV vaccine to 2 doses because it has been found that it can increase immunity against polio strain 2 and to prepare for an outbreak of polio from the mutated vaccine strain 2 ( VDPV2) In addition, 2-dose IPV vaccination is used in many countries.

Increasing the IPV vaccine to two doses would require approximately 1 million additional doses per year. Some of which have already been procured according to the vaccine demand and supply plan that the committee has approved. and must procure an additional 520,000 needles, which uses an additional budget of 145.86 million baht

The NHSO will use the budget saved from joint purchasing according to the fiscal year 2024 drug purchasing plan to proceed in order to comply with the vaccination plan.

Expanding the benefits of the Injectable Polio Vaccine (IPV) service, adding 1 additional dose (total of 2 doses) in the National Health Insurance System. It is in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization. As additional vaccine is procured to provide enough for two doses, it has been recommended that existing IPV vaccines be first administered to children as young as 2 months of age. Previously, the vaccine was given as a 1-dose injection for children aged 4 months.

In the next phase, NHSO will propose to the president to sign the announcement of such additional benefits. and will inform the service unit accordingly.
