Canadian hockey player Jonathan Toews has announced that he is struggling with long-term symptoms of covid and chronic fatigue syndrome. The Chicago Blackhawks captain has not played since January 28, and the club’s management placed him on the long-term injured list on Wednesday.
“It was really difficult to play with these symptoms. It got to the point in the last few weeks where I had no choice but to stop and just focus on recovery. Thank you for the patience and support of my teammates, coaches and the entire Blackhawks organization.” stated in the team’s statement.
The 34-year-old center missed the entire 2020/21 season due to immune system disorders. In the current season, he played in 46 duels and collected 28 points (14+14). Toews spent his entire career with Chicago, with whom he won three Stanley Cups, but he can become a free agent this summer.
“We will work with him and support him in everything he needs to feel good and get in a position to get back on the ice. We believe he will still play some games this season.” said general manager Kyle Davidson, who said he was not considering trading him before the transfer deadline (March 3).
