The Winnipeg Jets are in the second round of the NHL playoffs!
In a true thriller against the Edmonton Oilers, Kyle Connor (107th) shoots the hosts in the third overtime to victory and thus also to the sweep against the franchise around superstar Connor McDavid.
The Jets are also the ones that get off to a better start: Mark Scheifele (7th) takes the lead, which McDavid (8th) equalizes with his first goal in the current playoffs. Mason Appleton (16.), however, ensures that the jets have a 2: 1 break.
In the second third, the Oilers turn up, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (24th) and Alex Chiasson (37th) turn the game. However, as in games 2 and 3, the match goes into overtime. There it lasts until the 107th minute when Connor approaches Edmonton goalkeeper Mike Smith alone and defeats him with his rich wristshot.
Winnipeg wins a playoff series against Edmonton for the first time in franchise history and in the second round they face the Toronto winners against Montreal.
Islanders cheer after 2nd overtime
The New York Islanders celebrate a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs in the NHL and take the lead 3-2 in the “best of seven” series.
The New Yorkers have to wait until the 51st second of the second overtime for Josh Bailey’s winning goal. The Penguins take the lead twice through goals from Evgeni Malkin (9th) and Bryan Rust (28th), but Anthony Abeauvillier (20th) and Jordan Eberle (49th) can each equalize. You can also rely on goalkeeper Ilya Sorokin, who posted 48 saves, while Tristan Jarry was only confronted with 28 shots on his goal. The Penguins goalkeeper owes Bailey’s overtime winner with a bad pass directly to the later winning goal scorer.
This means that the Islanders can fix their entry into the next round with a win on Wednesday night, where the Boston Bruins, who have already eliminated Michael Raffl and the Washington Capitals, are waiting.
Lightning awarded first match puck
The Florida Panthers celebrate a 4-1 home win against defending champions Tampa Bay Lightning and shorten the series to 2: 3.
After Ross Colton’s 1-0 lead after just 53 seconds, the hosts turned up and prevented goals from MacKenzie Weegar (27th), Mason Marchment (37th), Patrick Hornqvist (41./PP) and an empty- Net goal by Frank Vatrano (60th) the premature end. Particularly in the spotlight is rookie goalkeeper Spencer Knight, who makes his playoff debut in the box of the Panthers. The 20-year-old managed 36 saves on the way to his first personal victory in the post-season.
The Toronto Maple Leafs win Game 3 at the Montreal Canadians 2-1 and take the lead in the series. William Nylander shoots the guests in the front in the 28th minute, Nick Suzuki equalizes in the 34th minute, but defender Morgan Rielly lets Toronto cheer three minutes later.
In Las Vegas, the Minnesota Wild keep their season alive with a 4-2 win in Game 5 at the Golden Knights and shorten the series to 2-3. Stone (9th) gives the home side the lead. Kaprizov (10th), Parise (12th) and Greenway (17th) turn the tables in the first part of the game. Martinez (30./PP) shortened, Sturm (60./EN) cleared everyone 39 seconds before the end.
Minnesota has only 14 shots on goal, Las Vegas 40.
