Last weekend, the traditional charity event Star for Children was held in Trenčín. Hockey player Tomáš Tatar took part in it again.
The NHL player showed that he can do it off the ice as well. He did well in beach soccer and volleyball. But what made him feel better?
“Football on sand is quite demanding, so I’m probably better at volleyball,” he said despite showing off his nimble feet at football.
The event caught him already during the summer preparation for the new season. “I am in the second week of training and will start the third. I haven’t been on the ice yet, I will add it in the next few weeks.”
These days he is also dealing with his future. After two seasons, his contract with the New Jersey Devils expires. “Now it is starting to be resolved. We have until July 1st. It’s all about a mutual agreement between me and the team. If we can come to an agreement that suits both parties, then I will stay with the Devils. And if not, then, unfortunately. I will have to go to the open market and see what my options will be there.”
Next season will be his thirteenth in the NHL. He would accept a worse offer if it was from a team with the potential to win Stanley Cup? “It would depend on the conditions. I deal with it every day with the agent and we also communicate with the teams. But it would certainly motivate me to play in a team that has such ambitions. It would be super. There is a bit of a problem with the salary cap in the NHL. It will be decided what to do with him. If he went up, it would help all the players.”
Tomáš Tatar also commented on the upcoming draft on Thursday, at which Slovakia could attack twice the number of drafted players. “There are guys there who should be high. The whole draft looks really strong. After the draft, it’s always about the player, how he prepares and how hard he works. Draft is only a gateway,” he added in conclusion.
