NHL player Cave (25) died of cerebral hemorrhage | NOW

Canadian ice hockey player Colby Cave died on Saturday at the age of 25 from the consequences of a cerebral hemorrhage. The Edmonton Oilers player had been kept in an artificial coma for several days.

“It is with great sadness that we let you know that Colby Cave died early in the morning,” an announcement by the family that the Oilers published on their website reads. “Both our families and I (Emily) are shocked, but we know that Colby was loved by us, his family and friends and the ice hockey world.”

Cave suffered a cerebral hemorrhage early this week. On Tuesday he underwent surgery and since then he has been in intensive care in a hospital in Toronto.

The National Hockey League (NHL) has also reacted with dismay to Cave’s death. “The NHL family mourns the heartbreaking death of Colby Cave. He was a serious and hardworking player and was admired by his teammates and coaches,” said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

This season, Cave accounted for one goal in eleven games for the Oilers. He was in his second season with Edmonton after transferring from Boston Bruins. He also played for Bakersfield Condors in the American Hockey League during this year.

The current season in the NHL is currently stalling due to the corona crisis. The competition was interrupted on March 12, three weeks before the end of the regular season.
