The New York Rangers split from goalkeeper Henrik Lundqvist by means of a buyout. The 38-year-old Swede was facing the final year of his seven-year contract valued at $ 59.5 million.
Lundqvist played for the Rangers for 15 years, has a record of 459 wins from 887 games with a fan rate of 91.8 percent. “King Henrik” ranks sixth in the NHL’s list of most goalkeeping wins and the seventh most saves and starts.
Lundqvist leads the Rangers in all relevant goalie statistics. The Swede reached the Stanley Cup final with the New Yorkers in 2014, but lost out to the Los Angeles Kings.
“THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!” Lundqvist wrote on social media. “I played my first game for New York Rangers 15 years ago. I came with high hopes and dreams, but in my wildest dreams I couldn’t imagine the great path that lay ahead of me.”
The Swede is likely to be replaced by Igor Shesterkin, who pushed him to the bench in the third game of the qualifying series against the Carolia Hurricanes.
Lundqvist will be able to sign with any team starting October 9th when Free Agency begins.
