Martin Chromiak fulfilled all the goals he went for in the camp in Los Angeles Kings. He shone among the newcomers, then he also appeared in the competition of the club’s best players.
The management rewarded him with a three-year rookie contract. Immediately after signing, the 19-year-old winger flew to Canada. He would like to help his Kingston Frontenacs team to the junior OHL title.
MARTIN CHROMIAK shone among the Kings’ hopes and approached the NHL again
Try telling us more about signing a rookie deal with Kings. Did you expect that?
“I went into the season saying I wanted to win a contract because after that, Los Angeles would lose my rights to me. I was pleased that it came so soon and I won’t have to think about it during the year. ”
Did they justify your signature?
“I have been told that since April, when I was last here, I have made incredible progress on and off the ice. I worked mainly to strengthen and gain muscles, which I did. I met the expectations of the management. I had a great start with the novice camp, I also did well in the young players’ tournament and then in the main camp, where I got a chance in the NHL preparatory match. ”
In Slovakia, the fans perceived you more as a shooter, in the camp they praised your ability to create a game. How did you see it?
“In the camp, they focused on all things, not just shooting and offensive. The AHL taught me what I have never experienced in Slovakia. The main thing was working with a hockey stick, how to take pucks. At the final meeting, they emphasized to me that everyone here can play hockey, shoot, skate, but it’s about details. During the summer, I improved in that and stood out from the others, so maybe the signature came. ”
Could the fact that you played in the AHL at the end of last season also help with the contract?
“I think that was one of the main things. I no longer went to the new and unknown. I knew what awaited me. I was not stressed. ”
Kings have multiple stars. Are you interested in anyone specific in the main camp?
“Of course, it was a great experience to be in the cabin with players like Anže Kopitar, Drew Doughty or Jonathan Quick. They won the Stanley Cup and have a lot of success. Seeing them train was a great experience. Everyone immediately asked me if I knew Marián Gáborík, as he had won the NHL with them. After signing, Majo also sent me a congratulatory text message. ”
You are going back to the junior competition. How do you feel about it?
“Since I was only nineteen in August, I can only play in the NHL or in the junior. Up to 20-year-old players go to the AHL by agreement. I expected to go to the junior. I signed the contract and I’m already in Kingstone. The Frontenacs have never won an OHL and would like to change that this year. We have a great team and excellent conditions to succeed. I’m very glad to be here. In my first year at the club, we were one of the worst in the league, now it will be different. ”
The peak of the season will also be a championship in twenty years. Do you expect more pressure on you?
“I’m really looking forward to it, because it was in the ‘bubble’ for the first year. I believe that there will be fans in the arenas now. We have a good team, but we have to go to the tournament modestly. ”
Have you already thought about the men’s national team?
“Now I will focus primarily on what awaits me overseas. Then there will be a world championship in twenty years. We’ll see what comes next. ”
INDIVIDUAL TRAININGS HELPED
Martin Chromiak was also helped to contract with LA Kings by individual trainings with skills coach Peter Bohunický.
“I’m very happy about it, because it’s partly an award for my robot, as Martin and I have been working for a long time. For the last two or three years, we have been intensively engaged in skating. Leading the puck, deceiving the opponent, evasive maneuver. I like how Martin always wants to shoot at the end of training and he doesn’t care that it’s midnight, because sometimes we only have ice then, “ said the coach, who also helps Andrej Seker or other players.
