NHL: Canucks send defending champions on vacation

Game 6 Summary – Canucks v. Blues,

EDMONTON – The Vancouver Canucks eliminated the defending Stanley Cup champions, beating the St. Louis Blues 6-2 on Friday night.

Tyler Motte, with two goals, Jay Beagle, Brock Boeser, Antoine Roussel and Troy Stecher hit the target for the Canucks, who won this Western Conference quarterfinal series 4-2.

The Vancouver team scored in the first period but broke away from the Blues with three goals in six minutes in the second period, chasing starting goaltender Jordan Binnington out of the net.

Jaden Schwartz scored both goals for the Blues.

In his first career playoffs, Jacob Markstrom turned aside 34 shots for the Canucks. It was his 10th start of the playoffs.

Binnington allowed four goals on 18 shots before giving way to Jake Allen. Allen finished the game with five saves on six shots.

The Canucks opened the scoring in the fourth minute of the game. Beagle grabbed a loose puck and beat Binnington on the mitt side.

In the second period, the Canucks’ three-goal streak began with Roussel’s second goal of the playoffs, which unleashed a quick shot that stole the vigilance of the Blues goaltender.

Stecher made it 3-0 as he put the finishing touches on a superb passing game in which four of five Canucks players touched the puck. Boeser kicked Binnington out of the game following a heavy landing shot.

Schwartz gave the Blues hope in the final period, but Motte planted the final nail in the coffin of the defending Stanley Cup champions when he brilliantly completed a two-on-one shorthanded climb.

The Canucks will now meet the Vegas Golden Knights. The first duel of this second round series will take place on Sunday evening.
