NHL: Brad Marchand sinks Rangers in overtime breakaway

Wednesday, 10 Feb 2021. 21:38

Brad Marchand found the back of the net after just 36 seconds of play in overtime and the Boston Bruins snatched a 3-2 victory from the New York Rangers on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

Marchand defeated goalkeeper Alexander Georgiev on a breakaway. After a quick backhand feint, the Bruins forward lifted the disc over Georgiev’s right pad. The puck hit the post before turning into the net.

Marchand’s breakaway was made possible by a fine defensive piece from Charlie McAvoy, who intercepted a pass from Pavel Buchnevich in a two-on-one breakaway.

The defender ricocheted off the ramp and Marchand picked up the puck at the red line to stand alone in front of Georgiev.

Chris Wagner and Anders Bjork netted the Bruins’ other goals.

Goaltender Tuukka Rask blocked 33 pucks to help the Bruins extend their winning streak to four and their streak to nine (8-0-1) with at least one point in the standings.

In the loss, a second in a row for David Quinn’s squad, Julien Gauthier scored his first career NHL goal. The other net was the work of Kevin Rooney.

Brendan Lemieux had two assists and Georgiev made 29 saves.

The two teams will cross swords again on Friday evening.

Alexis Lafrenière has been shut out again and has only scored one goal since the start of the season.
