The New York Rangers let slip a three-goal lead in the third period before losing 4-3 to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday afternoon.
Alexis Lafrenière set Rangers forward after 2:20 by redirecting a pass from Adam Fox, scoring his first goal since 30 October and his third of the season.
Chris Kreider and Julien Gauthier scored 33 seconds apart to make it 3-0. Gauthier has scored four goals in 14 games this season after scoring just three goals in 49 games last year.
Evan Bouchard, however, started the Oilers’ comeback in the third quarter with two strikes, first on the power play and then in one half in traffic.
Then, Dylan Holloway scored his first career NHL goal to tie the game. Albertan was the 14th overall pick in 2020.
Lafrenière, however, received a vicious penalty which opened the door for his opponent late in the game, and it was Leon Draisaitl who took full advantage by completing a superb passing game with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Connor McDavid.
Returning from a four-game road trip to the West Coast, Rangers received boos from the crowd after coming up against a team that had lost 7 of their last 10 games.
They also lost defensive back Ryan Lindgren in the third period after contact with Nugent-Hopkins.
The Oilers will host the Florida Panthers on Monday.
The Canes find their way back to victory; Toffoli’s 200th goal
Brett Pesce’s first goal of the season broke the deadlock and gave the Carolina Hurricanes their first win in six games, beating the Calgary Flames 3-2.
Seth Jarvis and Martin Necas also hit centers for Carolina, who were playing their last home game before mid-December. Jarvis ended an 11-game drought by completing Brent Burns’ pass at 6:20 of the first half as Necas earned his 10And second goal of the season.
Pesce’s power-play goal came with 11:14 left, on assists from former Montreal Canadiens Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Paul Stastny. It was his first goal since March.
Antti Raanta made 19 saves in his first start in five games. He was injured earlier this week and was ruled out Wednesday night when he was supposed to start.
Adam Ruzicka and Tyler Toffoli lined up for the Flames, who finished a six-game road trip with three straight losses and a 2-3-1 record. It was 200And Toffoli’s career goal in the Bettman circuit.
Dan Vladar, who blocked 30 shots, hasn’t tasted victory since his first game of the season in mid-October.
The Hurricanes scored power play goals twice in a row after being sidelined for six games in similar circumstances.
