(Johannesburg = Yonhap News) Correspondent Hyunmin Yoo = The military in Gabon, Central Africa, which caused a military coup, reopened three days after the border was closed.

According to AFP and Reuters on the 2nd (local time), a spokesman for the Gabonese military said on state television that day, “We have decided to reopen our land, sea and air borders from today.”

The spokesperson explained, “This is a measure to respect the rule of law, maintain good relations with countries around the world, including neighboring countries, and keep promises with the international community.”

Previously, the military announced that it would close the border and airspace until further notice after the ouster of President Ali Bongo Ondimba (64) on the 30th of last month and causing a coup.

Gabon’s military, led by Republic Guard commander General Bris Oligwi Nguma, appointed General Nguma to chair the Transitional Reconstruction Commission (CTRI) shortly after the coup.

Nguma will be sworn in as interim president of Gabon at the Constitutional Court on the 4th.

If the coup mastermind takes office, the 56-year long reign of President Bongo and his son will come to an end.

President Bongo has been in power for 14 years since 2009, and his father, former President Omar Bongo, has been in power for 42 years, from 1967 to 2009.

Right before the coup, Gabon authorities announced that President Bongo had won 64.27 percent of the votes in the presidential election on the 26th of last month and succeeded in a third consecutive term, but the military rejected it, saying that the result was unreliable.

Meanwhile, on the third day of the military coup, a local source reported that Gabon was in a calm state with no special disturbances.

The source said in a phone call with Yonhap News that day, “There has been no bloodshed so far.”
