NFL Week 16 Sunday Recap: Detroit Lions Win NFC North, Indianapolis Colts Suffer Setback

The Detroit Lions and the strong Amon-Ra St. Brown secure victory in the NFC North. The Indianapolis Colts are suffering a setback. A recap of the NFL’s early Sunday games in Week 16.

Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings 30:24

What an evening for Amon-Ra St. Brown!

The German-American receiver showed a strong performance in his Detroit Lions’ 30:24 win against the Minnesota Vikings and played his part in ensuring that the Lions won the NFC North and qualified for the playoffs.

It is the Lions’ first division title in 30 years.

In total, St. Brown contributed 106 receiving yards and a touchdown on twelve receptions to the Lions’ victory. Detroit now has a record of 11-4, the Vikings have to worry about the playoffs at 7-8.

For the Vikings, quarterback Nick Mullens had a performance with ups and downs. On the one hand, Mullens had 411 passing yards and two touchdowns, and on the other hand, he had four interceptions.

Cleveland Browns at Houston Texans 36:22

Thanks to quarterback Joe Flacco and receiver Amari Cooper, the Cleveland Browns secured a clear 36:22 win against the Houston Texans.

Flacco threw for 368 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Cooper caught 11 balls for 265 yards and two touchdowns. Cleveland’s running game also worked well, with Kareem Hunt and Jerome Ford each running into the end zone once.

The Browns improved their record to 10-5 and can plan for the playoffs. The Texans are now 8-7 and still have a good chance of making the postseason.

Indianapolis Colts at Atlanta Falcons 10:29

While the Atlanta Falcons (7-8) preserved their small playoff chance with the 29:10 victory, the Indianapolis Colts (8-7) had to accept a setback in the fight and the postseason.

In the duel between the backup quarterbacks, Taylor Heinicke had the better end, throwing for 229 yards and a touchdown.

Colts QB Gardner Minshew had 201 passing yards without a touchdown and had one interception.

Seattle Seahawks at Tennessee Titans 20:17

Geno Smith’s decisive touchdown pass was caught by tight end Colby Parkinson with 57 seconds left. The Seattle Seahawks took the lead 20:17 against the Tennessee Titans and never let it go.

Smith threw for a total of 227 yards and two touchdowns.

Titans running back Derrick Henry had a special statistic when he recorded a passing TD on a trick play and ran another touchdown himself.

The Seahawks now have a record of 8-7, while the Titans have five wins and ten losses.

Trevor Lawrence (Jacksonville Jaguars)
What a bitter evening for the Jaguars! Jacksonville had no chance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Trevor Lawrence also injured his shoulder. The quarterback had recently injured his ankle and had only just recovered from a concussion. The next few days will show how badly he got it. © 2023 Getty Images

T.J. Hockenson (Minnesota Vikings)
The tight end had to leave the game against the Detroit Lions early on Christmas Eve after taking a hard blow to his knee. Hockenson was first examined in the medical tent and a short time later he made his way to the cabin. Further investigations will have to show how serious the 26-year-old’s injury is.© 2023 Getty Images

Michael Pittman Jr. (Indianapolis Colts)
Michael Pittman Jr. has successfully completed the concussion protocol, but it is still open whether the Colts receiver will play against the Falcons. He is currently listed as “questionable” due to a shoulder injury and only trained fully on Thursday this week.© 2023 Getty Images

Zack Moss (Indianapolis Colts)
The Colts will definitely have to do without running back Zack Moss against the Falcons. The 26-year-old is unavailable due to a shoulder injury he sustained in the game against the Steelers last week. Jonathan Taylor, who has recovered, is likely to have a particularly heavy workload.© 2023 Getty Images

Brian Robinson Jr. (Washington Commanders)
According to The Athletic, Brian Robinson Jr. will not be able to play in Week 16 against the Jets. The Commanders’ running back is suffering from a hamstring problem and will apparently miss his second game in a row.© Icon Sportswire

Tyreek Hill (Miami Dolphins)
It wasn’t enough in the end. Tyreek Hill was missing from the Miami Dolphins in the division duel with the New York Jets. The ankle injury from the game against the Tennessee Titans made it impossible for the star receiver to play. Keenan Allen and Joey Bosa (Los Angeles Chargers)

De’Vonta Smith (Philadelphia Eagles)
As NFL insider Mike Garofolo reports, De’Vonta Smith of the Philadelphia Eagles did not participate in practice due to his knee injury. A game against the New York Giants in Week 16 could come too early for the star receiver. © Icon Sportswire

Ja’Marr Chase (Cincinnati Bengals)
As expected, the Cincinnati Bengals will be without wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase in Week 16 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Head coach Zac Taylor confirmed this. He already had to go out against the Minnesota Vikings with his shoulder injury, and after an MRI, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, it was clear: Chase will be missing “for a certain amount of time.”© 2023 Getty Images

Landon Dickerson (Philadelphia Eagles)
Eagles guard Landon Dickerson underwent thumb surgery and is expected to miss the upcoming game against the New York Giants. This is reported by “ESPN”. Dickerson played 68 of 69 possible offensive appearances in Monday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks.© Icon Sportswire

Darius Slay (Philadelphia Eagles)
The Eagles will be without Darius Slay in the coming weeks. The cornerback had to undergo knee surgery. The good news: Slay, who has had two interceptions so far this season, should be back during the regular season. © Icon Sportswire

Kenny Pickett (Pittsburgh Steelers)
The Pittsburgh Steelers will probably have to be without Kenny Pickett for a longer period of time. As “ESPN” reporter Adam Schefter reports, the quarterback will not be able to play for “several weeks.” Pickett suffered a hit against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 14 and injured his ankle. © UPI Photo

George Odum (San Francisco 49ers)
Bad news from the Niners: The franchise will be without George Odum for at least the rest of the regular season. The safety was injured in the Thanksgiving duel against the Seahawks while chasing a loose ball and suffered a torn bicep that will keep him out of action for two to four months.© IMAGO/Icon Sportswire

Joe Burrow (Cincinnati Bengals)
Quarterback Joe Burrow will miss the remainder of the season with a wrist injury. According to USA Today, the 26-year-old has now successfully completed the operation. The schedule for the Bengals playmaker’s return is six months.© 2023 Getty Images

Keaton Mitchell (Baltimore Ravens)
The Baltimore Ravens will be without running back Keaton Mitchell for the rest of the season. After the 23:7 win against the Jaguars, head coach John Harbaugh confirmed that the 21-year-old, who came to the Ravens as an undrafted rookie before the season, suffered a serious knee injury. He ran for 396 yards and two touchdowns in 2023 until his retirement due to injury.© ZUMA Wire

Justin Herbert (Los Angeles Chargers)
Justin Herbert broke the index finger of his right hand in Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos and will not return to the field this season. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the quarterback underwent surgery and backup Easton Stick is taking over his job. Since the Chargers have little hope of making the playoffs anyway, Herbert can recover in peace. © USA TODAY Network

Tank Dell (Houston Texans)
The Houston Texans are losing one of the NFL’s best young wide receivers. Tank Dell, who was selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft and has caught passes for 709 yards and seven touchdowns, broke his leg on a touchdown play in the game against the Denver Broncos and is out for the rest of the season .© ZUMA Wire

Jaelan Phillips (Miami Dolphins)
The fears have been confirmed. The Miami Dolphins will be without Jaelan Phillips for the rest of the season. The pass rusher tore his Achilles tendon. The Dolphins confirmed the diagnosis on social media. The 24-year-old has six and a half sacks this season. © 2023 Getty Images

Green Bay Packers at Carolina Panthers 33:30

With great effort, the Green Bay Packers kept their playoff hopes alive with a 33-30 win over the Carolina Panthers.

For a long time the Packers (7-8) looked like the sure winners, but in the second half the Panthers turned things around with quarterback Bryce Young (312 yards, 2 touchdowns).

The performance should give the struggling Panthers (2-13) hope for the coming season.

Washington Commanders at New York Jets 28:30

In a game where nothing was at stake, both teams really turned up the heat again. While the New York Jets owned the first half, the Washington Commanders started to catch up in the second half.

However, this was not crowned with success. A field goal from kicker Greg Zürlein made the final score 30:28 for the Jets.

The Jets improved their record to 6-9, the Commanders are 4-11.

The Jets are already looking ahead to the coming season; before the game, owner Woody Johnson said he wanted to continue working with head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas in 2024.
