NFL
The playoff participants in the National Football League (NFL) have been determined. The Las Vegas Raiders were the last team to secure a ticket for the knockout phase on Sunday evening (local time). With the 35:32 victory after overtime against the Los Angeles Chargers, the Raiders also took the Pittsburgh Steelers and thus playmaker Ben Roethlisberger, who was about to end his career, into the postseason. San Francisco is also included.

The Steelers had previously contributed in the AFC North duel at the Baltimore Ravens with 16:13 after overtime before the very last game of the regular season offered support. Ironically, a draw would have meant the end for Pittsburgh and the end of Roethlisberger’s 18-year career. So it extends at least one game, next week it’s away against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Steelers also benefited from the Indianapolis Colts’ surprising 11:26 loss at the bottom of the NFL, the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Florida team has the first pick in this year’s draft.
The Los Angeles Chargers around young star Justin Herbert missed the postseason again. In a tight game, the 32:35 against the Raiders was only certain after extra time. A tie would have put both teams in the playoffs, but the Raiders made a last-minute field goal attempt and won the game. The Raiders are visiting the Cincinnati Bengals next week.
In the NFC, the San Francisco 49ers also booked the playoff ticket at the last minute. In Los Angeles, the visitors caught up with the Rams from a 0:17 deficit and won after overtime with 27:24. The 30-20 win in Atlanta wasn’t enough for the New Orleans Saints. The 49ers now meet the Dallas Cowboys in a traditional duel.
Tennessee and Green Bay have byes
The Tennessee Titans secured the bye in the AFC by beating the Houston Texans 28:25. The Titans and Chiefs have 12 wins and five losses, but the Titans won the head-to-head, giving them the break like the Green Bay Packers in the NFC and home advantage throughout the playoffs. Tampa Bay starts the postseason at home against Philadelphia.
The New England Patriots lost their last regular season game to the Miami Dolphins 24-33 and were unable to intercept the Buffalo Bills at the top of the AFC East. The two duel on Saturday for promotion to the quarterfinals. For the first time since 1988, a playoff game will be played on a Monday, with the Rams welcoming the Arizona Cardinals to a reunion.
