Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was briefly arrested Sunday in a traffic incident just hours before his NFL debut, the league confirmed.
Hill was later released and was at Dolphins Stadium for the Dolphins’ season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Miami team said in a brief statement that did not detail the reason for the arrest.
What happened to Tyreek Hill?
“Hill was stopped for a traffic incident a block from the stadium and briefly detained by police. He has since been released. Several teammates witnessed the incident and stopped to offer support. Tyreek and all other players involved have arrived safely at the stadium and will be available for today’s game,” read a team statement cited by TMZ.
A video of the incident showed Hill, one of the NFL’s top players at his position, lying face down on the asphalt next to his car as he was handcuffed by several officers outside the Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium.
According to ESPN, the player was arrested for reckless driving and then had a verbal altercation with the police during which he was handcuffed.
Hill’s agent Drew Rosenhaus was quoted by ESPN as saying that this was “a heartbreaking situation” and “completely unnecessary”: “We will investigate… We will keep an eye on Tyreek.”
Hill, 30, will be playing his third season in a Dolphins uniform and the ninth of his NFL career, in which he was selected to the Pro Bowl six times.
The receiver previously played for the Kansas City Chiefs, with whom he won the Super Bowl in 2020.
