The NFL regular season is marching with seven league boots towards the playoffs. What would the playoffs look like if the season was over now? Here you can find the big overview week by week.
The NFL regular season will take place from the beginning of September 2024 to the beginning of January 2025: 32 teams will fight week after week, game after game for every win for the best possible record in order to move into the postseason – the playoffs cast their shadow ahead and are THE goal for all organizations. But only 14 franchises actually manage to extend their season.
After just four months, 18 teams are ready to pack their bags, put their feet up and head into the offseason. For the majority of the league, football will only be played in front of the TV sets.
For everyone else, from the Wildcard Round onwards, things go quickly. Once you have made it into the postseason, only three wins separate you from the Super Bowl, which will take place on February 9, 2025 in New Orleans – and only four wins from the greatest possible glory that a professional in American football can achieve.
Until then, there will still be a fight for every spot in the regular season. Which begs the question: If it ended now, what would the playoff picture look like in 2024? We provide the foresight in the subjunctive.

The NFL is divided into two conferences: the AFC and the NFC. Each conference fields seven playoff teams and determines one participant each who will be able to play for the championship at Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans on February 9, 2025. The playoffs are played in knockout mode: whoever wins moves on to a round, and the loser’s season ends immediately.
The top seed in each conference enjoys a bye in the Wildcard Round and automatically advances to the Divisional Round. The other six teams play per conference to see who can play for a place in the conference championships. The champions of the AFC and NFC will then be determined there – and they will then meet in the Super Bowl.
If the regular season had ended after eight weeks, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions would automatically be in the divisional round as the top seeds. The Houston Texans and the Washington Commanders, as the second-best teams, would have to play against the seventh-place teams in their conference for a place in the second round of the playoffs. With the San Francisco 49ers, one of the league’s championship favorites would miss the playoffs; the 2024 Super Bowl participant is currently only the tenth best team in the NFC.
