NFL: New York Giants part with Golden Tate wide-end

Thursday, March 4, 2021. 5:02 PM

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – The New York Giants released the Golden Tate wide-end on Thursday in a move that will see them clear $ 6.1 million from the salary cap.

32-year-old Tate himself confirmed the news in a message posted to his Twitter account. In passing, he praised the organization for its professionalism, wished his former teammates to win the National Association Eastern Section championship next season and thanked fans in the greater New York metropolitan area for their support.

Tate, who was set to earn a salary of US $ 8.4 million in 2021, fell short of his well-founded expectations after he signed a contract worth US $ 37 million in 2019.

The veteran wide receiver has had a few issues with the Giants. He missed the first four games of 2019 because he used a performance enhancing product.

Last season, he was injured and he was benched for a game against Washington because he complained on a TV camera, after scoring a touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, that the ball was not thrown at him often enough.

In two seasons with the Giants, Tate appeared in 23 games, including 14 as a starter. When you factor in the fact that he missed the first four games of the season, his stats in 2019 weren’t bad: 49 passes catches for 676 yards and six touchdowns.

Last year its numbers weren’t so good. He was limited to 35 catches for gains of 388 yards and two touchdowns in 12 games.

The Giants have also released inside linebacker David Mayo. This decision will save them US $ 2.3 million.
