A week ago, Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions agreed to go their separate ways for the new NFL season after twelve years together. The 32-year-old quarterback, drawn as the first overall pick in the 2009 draft, leads the franchise in every pass category, but always missed the big hit in Detroit and made it into the play-offs only three times. Every time there was the end of the first lap.
Things might look different soon, at least for Stafford. As ESPN reports, at least eight teams have come forward with offers for the playmaker in Detroit, and ultimately the Lions agreed with the Los Angeles Rams on a spectacular trade.
Rams give two more first round picks
Stafford moves to LA, in return the Rams send quarterback Jared Goff, a third and two first-hour picks to the “Motor City”. This means that the Rams will no longer have the right to vote in the first draft round until at least 2024.
After moving from St. Louis to Los Angeles in 2016, the franchise immediately set an exclamation point and pulled Goff to number one in the draft. With the arrival of Head Coach Sean McVay the following year, Goff made a giant leap forward, made it to the Pro Bowl twice and even led the Rams to the Super Bowl in 2019 (3:13 loss to the Patriots).
In 2019, Goff signed a monster contract in Los Angeles
But Goff, like Stafford in Detroit, was never really happy either, which in contrast to Stafford was more due to the fact that the now 26-year-old did not make the leap to elite quarterback. Even so, he had signed a $ 134 million contract in LA through 2024 – which the Lions are now sitting on.
While the upheaval is being initiated in Detroit with a new general manager (Brad Holmes) and a new head coach (Dan Campbell), the Rams are now opening their title window wide. Stafford is said to add a strong offense to an outstanding defense. In Las Vegas, the odds on a Super Bowl victory for the Rams dropped immediately.
