Jim Brown is one of the biggest, brightest and most important stars the NFL has ever produced. In terms of athletics, he was way ahead of his time. Hardly any defender could keep up when he started as running back. Brown was the National Football League rushing leader for eight of his nine seasons, and in 1964 the Browns clinched the championship largely thanks to Brown.

But the exceptional talent with jersey number #32 also campaigned for the reputation of black players in the NFL. “You couldn’t just play back then and ignore the social conditions in the country,” Brown said after his career. It was a thorn in his side that dark-skinned players were simply considered “too stupid” for some positions. His commitment after his football career also fitted into his CV: the ex-professional helped dark-skinned people to get out of criminal gangs through the Amer-I-can program.

Brown, on the other hand, who also appeared in more than 40 films in front of the camera, did not manage entirely without violence himself. He was charged with attempted murder after model Eva Bohn-Chin fell over the second floor balcony during an argument. Traffic offenses, physical injuries and allegations of rape were also his constant companions after his career. Brown passed away in Los Angeles at the age of 87.
