The Lions confirmed the deal with the former New Orleans Saints tight end instructor on Wednesday, the day after Brad Holmes was hired as the organization’s general manager.
On their Twitter account, the Lions posted a photo of Campbell signing his contract.
Campbell, who is 44, initialed a six-year agreement, according to a person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the terms of the contract did not not made public.
“With over 20 years of experience as an instructor and player in the National Football League, Dan understands the demands of professional football and knows what it takes to be successful,” said owner Sheila Ford Hamp in an official statement.
“It will help promote the culture we want to instill within our organization, while bringing a great level of energy, respect for our sport and an identity that everyone can align with. ”
Campbell, who was also an assistant coach with the Saints, has 11 seasons of coaching experience and 11 more as a player in the NFL. He went 5-7 as interim head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2015.
Campbell, who is from Clifton, Texas, shone as a tight end with Texas A&M University and was selected in the third round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. He caught 91 passes for 934 yards and 11 touchdowns with the Giants, Dallas Cowboys, Lions and Saints.
Campbell, who played with the Lions from 2006 to 2008, is the first former color-bearer on the team to become their head coach since Hall of Fame Joe Schmidt from 1967 to 1972.
“Dan’s passion for this opportunity was evident throughout the process surrounding our interview,” said Lions President Ron Wood.
“When we began the search for a head coach, it was imperative to find the right leader, who shares our commitment to building a winning culture focused on organizational alignment and collaboration. The leadership Dan has displayed throughout his football career has prepared him for this next step. ”
The Lions ended the final season with a 5-11 record – they have reached the 10-game losing mark in 13 seasons since the start of the 21e century – and have scored just one playoff victory since conquering the NFL Championship in 1957.
