NFL Considering Expanding Regular Season to 18 Games for Increased Revenue

Frankfurt/Main (dpa) – The American football league NFL can imagine playing 18 instead of 17 games in the main round in the future.

“Two years ago we added one game in the regular season. Maybe we will do that again to get to 18 games. We are having this discussion,” reported league boss Roger Goodell to the German Press Agency. For the NFL, more games would primarily mean additional revenue.

For the 2021/2022 season, the league increased the number of games in the regular season for the first time since 1978. Until 1977 there were 14 regular games per team. Overall, the NFL is satisfied with the structure of the league, as Goodell explained. The NFL boss cannot imagine holding another tournament during the season, as the North American basketball league NBA is doing from this season. “We are always striving to improve, but I don’t see a tournament during the season.”
