The NFL betting scandal continues. After the top football league in the world banned five players in April for violating sports betting guidelines, further investigations are now underway, according to an ESPN report.
In the first phase of the investigation, four Detroit Lions players and one Washington Commanders professional were banned for violating the gambling policy.
Detroit receiver Quintez Cephus and safety CJ Moore have been sidelined indefinitely, as has Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney. The trio can apply for reinstatement for the league after a year – but the Lions have already announced that the two named players have been fired.
NFL suspends five players for betting offenses
The two Detroit receivers Jameson Williams (first round pick 2022) and Stanley Berryhill (in his second year) were each suspended for six games.
In the course of the current investigation, another Lions player is said to have been targeted by the league. It is unclear who it is. However, it should not be a prominent member of last year’s team.
According to US media, Cephus, Moore and Toney are said to have bet on NFL games, which is not allowed. Williams and Berryhill, on the other hand, have bet on college games. While NFL pros are generally allowed to bet on NBA, college and other non-NFL games, they are not allowed to do so from their training grounds, team planes, hotels, etc.
Because both were placing mobile bets at the Lions team lot, they will have to watch a third of the upcoming season.
In its statement at the time, the NFL said it found no evidence that inside information was used in betting or that a game was affected.
Lions dismiss Cephus and Moore
Lions GM Brad Holmes had previously commented on the earlier issue in a statement. “These players have made decisions that are not consistent with our company values and against league rules. We have made the decision to part ways with Quintez and CJ effective immediately.”
“We are disappointed with the decisions Stanley and Jameson have made and will be working with both players to ensure they understand the seriousness of these violations and have clarity on future league rules.”
Incidentally, regardless of these penalties, several Detroit Lions employees were fired from various departments last month – according to “ESPN”, they too had violated the gambling guidelines.
Commanders respond to incident
The commanders also commented, albeit much more briefly. “We have fully cooperated with the NFL’s investigation since receiving the notice and support the league’s actions,” the team said. “Any further questions on this subject should be directed to the NFL League Office.”
According to media reports, the franchises were informed about the investigation about a month ago.
