The fatal extension
In May 2021, Paris happily extended the contract with the 30-year-old Brazilian until 2025. But the supposed coup turned out to be a colossal misjudgment just a year later. Neymar’s contract now runs until 2027 thanks to two automatically effective clauses. Until then, the offensive player will earn a monstrous net salary of 30 million euros – many clubs that can keep up in such magnitudes are out of the question.
That’s what PSG thought too, who, according to a report by ‘Le Parisien’, approached Manchester City to make a Neymar transfer palatable to the Skyblues. However, Pep Guardiola’s club immediately declined – the arrival of the noble technician would upset the structure of the English champions too much.
The fact that ManCity, one of the richest clubs in club football, apparently does not want to do the financial feat for Neymar puts PSG in an almost hopeless situation. The former dream relationship threatens to degenerate into a lengthy marriage of convenience.
