Neymar eclipsed Pele as the Brazil national team’s top scorer by surpassing the three-time World Cup winner’s career tally on Friday.
Football star Neymar scored his 78? and 79? goal for the Brazil national team, setting a new record, in the 5-1 victory over Bolivia in a World Cup qualifier.
Neymar’s goals in Belém, a city located in the Amazon, allow him to surpass by two points the total of Pelé, the three-time World Cup winner, as top scorer for the Seleção.
” I am very happy. I don’t have the words. I never imagined reaching this record. And I want to make it clear that just because I surpassed Pelé doesn’t mean I’m better than him or any other player on the national team. I have always wanted to write my story, to write my name in the history of Brazilian football and the local team. Today I did it. To my family and all my teammates, thank you,”
The president of the Brazilian Federation paid tribute to him by giving him a commemorative plaque.
Neymar’s historic goal came following a low cross into the penalty area, which the striker finished with relentless precision from close range.
He celebrated his goal by raising his fist to the sky, like the legendary Pelé.
