The new championship should broaden the accessibility of the sport for women and lay the foundations for a professional life in motorsport. “For the first time since our foundation in 1904, we are offering a women’s world championship in track racing. There was a lot of demand for it,” said FIM president Jorge Viegas. “We are trying to get women from all over the world to participate and it is really the intention that women can become pros, that they will earn a salary as a motorcycle racer.”

The FIM hopes to hold the first race in 2024 in March or April. The Women’s Road Race World Championship will for the time being consist of at least six rounds on European circuits, with two races per round. The championship will go together with the Superbike World Championship. All drivers will have access to the same engine. It is not yet known which company will supply those machines.
