The Boeing Starliner capsule will embark on an unmanned flying mission to the ISS.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WASHINGTON — Taksi astronot Boeing will soon be launched to the International Space Station (ISS) on July 30. CST-100 . Capsules Starliner has passed the flight readiness review (FRR) for the upcoming launch. Starliner will embark on an unmanned Orbital Flight Test 2 (OFT-2) mission to the station.
“After reviewing the team’s data and everyone’s readiness, everyone said ‘go’ for today’s launch and moving out for the mission,” said Kathy Lueders, associate administrator of NASA’s Exploration and Human Operations Mission Directorate. Space, Friday (23/7).
Boeing developed the Starliner with funding from NASA’s commercial crew program. The development is designed to help prepare private American spacecraft to fill the crew of the now retired shuttle fleet.
In 2014, the program selected Boeing and SpaceX for this work. SpaceX has launched three manned missions to the space station for NASA. Two of them are contract flights that are fully operational. SpaceX’s first astronaut mission, launched in May 2020, was a demonstration flight.
Starliner isn’t ready to carry astronauts yet. First the Starliner needs to prove that it can get to and from the orbiting lab safely and smoothly. Boeing has taken a loophole in this important unmanned mission, launching OFT-1 in December 2019.
But the Starliner ran into some serious problems during the flight and failed to meet the station as planned. Two OFT-1 reviews conducted NASA last year found a total of 80 corrective actions Boeing needed to take before the Starliner could fly again.
“During FRR, the Boeing and NASA teams gathered to hear presentations from principal mission managers as part of an in-depth assessment of flight readiness for the Boeing CST-100 Starliner spacecraft and systems, mission operations, support functions, and space readiness,” NASA officials wrote. .
OFT-2 is scheduled to launch from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, which is adjacent to KSC. The Starliner will lift off aboard the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket at 2:53 p.m. EDT on July 30, bound for the ISS. If all goes well, the Starliner will return to Earth six days later.
