– Next month will be the worst

On Saturday, the total number of omicron cases in Denmark went up to 15,452, an increase of 3893 cases from the day before. On Sunday, the number had risen to 18,753 in Denmark, new figures from the Statens Serum Institut show.

The omikron variant is an important reason why Denmark has chosen to carry out a new and comprehensive shutdown.

Both cinemas, museums and amusement parks must be closed from Sunday. Bars, restaurants and cafes must be closed between 23 and 5 o’clock, and there is a ban on drinking from 22 o’clock.

Denmark is a pioneering country when it comes to test and analysis capacity. Every day, they perform over 200,000 PCR tests, despite having a population of 5.8 million, department director Troels Lillebæk at the Statens Serum Institut recently told Dagbladet.

SSI is Denmark’s answer to the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH).

Omicron infection is particularly prevalent in Copenhagen, and many of those infected are young.

“The worst period”

Transfer The Washington Post Acting Director Tyra Grove Krause at the Statens Serum Institut comes with a gloomy prediction about the future.

“The next month will be the worst period so far in the pandemic,” Grove Krause told the newspaper.

She makes no secret of the fact that she believes that the omicron variant will undoubtedly overload the hospitals in the future – regardless of whether it results in a milder course of the disease or not.

Several reports, included FHI’s preliminary overview of the Christmas table outbreak in Oslo, suggests that the omicron variant gives a milder disease picture than the delta variant. At present, however, there is considerable uncertainty associated with the properties of the variant.

However, Avisa writes that data from Denmark so far suggest that hospital admissions are slightly lower among people infected with the new variant. It is emphasized, however, that one has to wait a couple of weeks to be able to determine whether this is really true.

Becomes dominant in Norway

The omikron variant has now been proven in at least 67 municipalities in Norway, shows a survey Dagbladet has done. On Friday, more than 2,000 cases were detected.

In the latest the risk assessment from FHI about the omicron variant, it is stated that it will soon become dominant, which will give significantly increased spread of infection.

Even if the omicron variant were to cause less serious illness in the individual, the large spread would still lead to significantly more admissions than today, according to the institute.

The omicron variant will already in December cause a wave of many sick, many hospitalizations, significant burden on the health service and significant burden on society, including through widespread sickness absence, wrote NIPH.
