Next Goal Wins tells the story of the world’s worst football team, who lost 31-0 to Australia in 2001 and yet cling to their desire to qualify for the 2014 World Cup. Now there is a first trailer:
Taika Waititi has made his mark as an MCU director in recent years, proving he’s capable of directing big-budget blockbusters as well. But the director actually comes from the indie film corner. Films like “Eagle vs Shark”, “5 Zimmer Küche Sarg” or “Where the wild people hunt” are offbeat comedies that focused on lovable outsider characters and always acted as a mouthpiece for the unheard.
Before Taika Waititi turns to his previously untitled “Star Wars” project (if anything9, the filmmaker returns to his cinematic roots with the sports comedy “Next Goal Wins”, which tells the story of the American- Samoa, which still holds the record for “the heaviest defeat by a national football team” after being crushed by Australia 31-0 on April 11, 2001.
A likeable underdog story with a lovable cast and quirky characters, plus “X-Men” villain Michael Fassbender as a choleric coach with an alcohol problem and the typical Taika Waititi humor: The first trailer for “Next Goals Wins” promises a football comedy with heart.
And that’s what “Next Goal Wins” is all about
Since the 31-0 loss, the American Samoa national soccer team has been world famous – but sadly the kind of fame one would rather not have, as the squad has since been considered the worst soccer team in the world. Never has a team lost higher in an official match. And even after this grotto kick there is no country to be seen: the next 30 international matches are lost without exception. Nevertheless, the team has an unbroken sportsmanship and keeps their sights set firmly on their goal of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.
Support comes from outside: The American coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender) should help. Within just three weeks he is supposed to bring the team into shape and put them on the road to success. But will rock-hard training and far-reaching changes in the team structure be enough to turn the harmless kickers into a real team that can also take on serious opponents?
From November 16, 2023, viewers in Germany will also be able to see for themselves whether Taika Waititi’s latest film has become a cinematic dream goal or rather a harmless ball, because then the film will start in our cinemas. For OV friends, we have included the trailer again in the original language here:
