The construction of the ‘next-generation Busan-type express railway (BuTX)’ connecting Gadeokdo New Airport in Gangseo-gu, Busan and Osiria Tourist Complex in Gijang-gun is being promoted in earnest.
Busin Mayor Park Hyeong-joon held a press conference on the afternoon of the 25th and said, “After reviewing the recently received ‘BuTX private investment project proposal,’ it was judged to be in line with city policy, so we decided to pursue this project in earnest.” This business proposal was officially submitted to the city on the 15th by ‘BuTX Express Train Co., Ltd.’, with Hana Financial Group as the manager. ‘BuTX Express Train Co., Ltd.’ submitted a letter of intent to participate in the project to Busan City last June.
BuTX is a next-generation, eco-friendly express train that runs at ultra-high speeds on hydrogen fuel on a subterranean railway (tunnel railway) below 40m underground. According to the city, this express railway departs from Gadeok New Airport and runs through Myeongji-dong in Gangseo-gu, Hadan-dong in Saha-gu, Bukhang Redevelopment Site in Dong-gu, Bujeon-dong in Busanjin-gu, and Centum City in Haeundae-gu to the Orisia Tourist Complex in Gijang-gun. There are a total of 7 stations, including the starting and ending points. The length of the route is 54km.
The city’s original plan included six stations, but sub-stations with large floating populations were added considering user convenience and operational economics. Additionally, the driving speed was lowered from the original 180 km/h to 150 km/h. The travel time was estimated to be 18 minutes to North Port and 33 minutes to Osiria, the final stop. This is 3 to 7 minutes longer than the original plan of 15 minutes for North Port and 26 minutes for Orisia.
In addition, a plan to use an undersea tunnel was originally planned, but considering safety and ease of construction, the route was changed to an inland deep railway. The underground depth was planned to be 50 to 80 m. On the other hand, the cost-benefit (B/C) increased to 1.14 from 0.88 in the city plan.
The total construction cost was estimated at 4.7692 trillion won. This is an increase of more than 2 trillion won compared to the original estimate of 2.586 trillion won. In its proposal, BuTX Express Train Co., Ltd. proposed a plan to build the train over 60 months, complete it, operate it for 40 years, and pay it as a donation to the city.
The city plans to designate a project operator through a preliminary review by the Busan Research Institute, a private investment eligibility investigation by the Korea Development Institute, and a report to the city council, sign an actual agreement, and begin construction in 2025 and open BuTX in 2030.
Mayor Park Hyeong-jun said, “The next-generation Busan-type rapid transit (BuTX) project, which introduced ‘hydrogen rail vehicle’ technology for the first time in Korea, will be an opportunity for Busan to leap forward as an eco-friendly hydrogen high-tech city.” He added, “Furthermore, Busan will grow into a global hub city.” Shiki will act as a propellant,” he said.
