The next United Nations climate conference, COP27, will be held in 2022 in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. That has become clear in Glasgow, where COP26 is coming to an end. COP stands for Conference of the Parties.
According to the Egyptian climate minister, Fouad, the next edition of the summit will have a clear African signature. Financing the costs of combating climate change is therefore again an important topic.
The summit on the climate has been held twice before on the African continent: in 2016 in Marrakech in Morocco and in 2011 in Durban, in South Africa. The location where COP28, in 2023, will be held, has also become known. The United Arab Emirates will then host.
Last day Glasgow
Tomorrow is the last scheduled day of the talks in Glasgow, although that does not mean that the summit will end. Traditionally, discussions are continued until an agreement has been reached that all parties can agree to.
The British conference chair, Sharma, says that much has already been achieved in the draft agreements that have been drawn up. At the same time, he emphasized that a lot of work still needs to be done before agreement is reached on all points. “It cannot be emphasized enough how difficult that is. If it was easy, we would have done it in recent years.”
