There were only two left: The extraordinary series of injuries at Bundesliga basketball team s.Oliver Wrzburg is slowly taking on surreal traits. As the club announced on Thursday afternoon, Brekkott Chapman has now also injured himself so badly that he will be out for an indefinite period of time. It will be at least several weeks. After Zach Smith (shoulder) and Justin Sears (cruciate ligament), the 24-year-old is expanding the hospital for long-term injuries at the Baskets, which now only have two ready-to-use import players, Cameron Hunt and Tyson Ward, and on Sunday (8.30 p.m.) have to compete with the German champions and cup winners Alba Berlin.
Thanks to a 103:63 victory over Braunschweig, the capital city reached the top four tournament in the cup competition on Tuesday evening, in which they will play the cup winners with Munich, Ulm and Gttingen. When and where will be determined.
Chapman partially tore his Achilles tendon in the 80:72 success of the Baskets in Frankfurt on Sunday. How long it will be out depends on the type of therapy, which obviously has not yet been determined: conventional = several weeks, or surgery = several months. The baskets seek advice from experts at home and abroad.
Particularly bitter: The Wrzburg player, who is tallest at 2.06 meters, had to take a break for practically the entire past season due to an injury and just struggled back to Bundesliga level after another injury in preparation for the current season. Most recently in Frankfurt, the power forward, who had to help out as a center after Sears’ injury, with a double-double (18 points, ten rebounds) was one of the guarantors of Wrzburg’s fifth success of the season.
First of all, the injury is very, very sad for Brekkott, “said Baskets coach Denis Wucherer when asked by the editorial team.” He had just fought his way back and was on the right track. He was an important factor in our away wins in Bonn and Frankfurt. “The 47-year-old and his assistant Steven Key as well as sports manager Kresimir Loncar have been on the lookout for two, preferably three, re-signings for some time now. Since the injuries of Smith and Sears and the Separating from Tayler Persons, they have intensified their search again, but have not yet found them.
For the team, Brekkott’s renewed injury after the failures of Zach and Justin is of course a mean disaster. With Jonas Weitzel, we currently have a player over two meters in our line-up, “says Wucherer:” It is now clear that we need at least two, preferably three newcomers to be competitive again from the beginning of February in the battle for relegation.
Until then, the baskets now have three tasks in front of their chests, in which even two most hectic and prominent newcomers – at least according to human judgment – cannot help them. After the trip to the reigning champions and cup winners in Berlin on Sunday (January 24th, 8.30 p.m.), it’s off to Oldenburg on Saturday (January 30th, 8.30 p.m.), before Munich comes to the Main on the following Wednesday (3.2., 8.30 p.m.). Even with Chapman and Sears and Smith, a success against one of the top dogs in their current form would have been an unimaginable basketball miracle.
After that, the baskets have a busy program ahead of them (four games in nine days), and at least three times it’s also really about the sausage: In the games against the current cellar children Gttingen (Saturday, 6 February, 8.30 p.m.) and Gieen (Tuesday, 9.2., 8.30 p.m.) and in Weienfels (Friday, February 12, 7 p.m.), the Wrzburg team should score as much as possible before it goes against the current leader Ludwigsburg (Sunday, February 14, 8.30 p.m.). Wucherer has set ten wins as the first goal of the season in order to be able to put any worries about staying up in the league as early as possible.
With the squad currently available, not only does the “early” appear in acute danger, but also the only goal that has consistently been declared in this round: the preservation of the Bundesliga location in Wrzburg.
