She does not write it explicitly, but according to RB’s understanding, the party veteran is doing this to pave the way for shooting star Tonje Brenna, who is the hottest candidate to become the new deputy leader of Ap when the national meeting gathers on 4-6 May. Both are from Jessheim, and there is no room for two from Akershus, who are also ministers, in the prestigious central government.

The central board is the party’s highest body after the national meeting and the national board. Grasrota has complained that the body is too top-heavy and that wider representation is needed. With Tonje Brenna on his way in, Huitfeldt chooses to give way.
If Tonje Brenna becomes the new deputy leader, she is probably the leading candidate to take over from Jonas Gahr Støre when he one day steps down as Labor leader.
