News: In Memoriam Martin Schröder

We were saddened to hear that Martin Schröder has passed away at the age of 93. With him passed away an aviator, aviation pioneer and entrepreneur par excellence. Martin’s passion for aviation led to an airline that was the foundation for modern-day freight transport, but was also the cradle of the modern air holiday – it says on its website KLM.

With Martinair he has made numerous (distant) holiday destinations accessible to Dutch people. His tenacity and foresight paved the way for the close collaboration with KLM and ultimately for Air France KLM Martinair Cargo. His commitment was unparalleled. We wish his wife, children, grandchildren and other loved ones a lot of strength in coping with this loss.

Johan Martin Schröder (May 13, 1931 – October 2, 2024) was a Dutch pilot and founder of Martinair, the second Dutch airline (after KLM) and the first Dutch charter airline.

When founded in 1958, the company was called Martin’s Air Charter (MAC). In 1998 (40 years after the founding of Martinair), Schröder resigned as CEO. He was succeeded by Aart van Bochove. Between September 1975 and September 1976, Schröder was chairman of AMREF Flying Doctors Netherlands. In 1981 he became an honorary member of the organization.
