News – EHV1 virus epidemic in horses

This respiratory tract virus which is harmless to humans is unfortunately very contagious and can have serious consequences for horses. The disease is spread by inhalation or contact with infected secretions. It can therefore be transmitted by humans (by transporting the virus, for example by touching animals) or by equipment.
Walkers are therefore asked not to touch the horses during their walks, this in order to avoid contributing to the spread of the virus.
he is also recommended to owners to vaccinate their horses. Although the vaccine does not offer a full guarantee, it can prevent the virus from spreading.

Following the contaminations which took place during a competition in Spain, the FEI (the International Riding Federation) has decided to abolish all international competitions until March 28. This measure affects 10 European countries including Belgium. For its part, the Royal Belgian Federation of Equestrian Sports recommends canceling training, other gatherings and in general all non-essential horse transport.
