News Anchor Fired Over Starbucks Cup: Political Controversy and Backlash

Turkish news anchor Meltem Günay was fired on Sunday 24 December after bringing a clearly visible Starbucks cup with him on air.

This is reported by the channel itself on Twitter/X, relayed by several international media such as The Independent.

The coffee cup is to blame

Günay worked as a news anchor at the Turkish, pro-Erdogan television channel TGRT. Several viewers are said to have reacted to the Starbucks cup standing in front of the news anchor on last Sunday’s broadcast.

Many consider Starbucks to be pro-Israel, and the coffee cup was thus perceived as a political stance from Günay.

In a statement from the TV channel they write that both the news anchor and the producer of the broadcast were fired as a result of inappropriate product placement.

– In line with the institution’s principles, it is strictly forbidden for the anchor to promote any company, the statement says.

TGRT further writes that they recognize the Turkish people’s support for Gaza, and that they condemn the actions of the news anchor and the producer.

It’s boiling around Starbucks

According to the news agency Reuters a boycott campaign is spreading among Arab countries against Western brands and chains, such as Starbucks and McDonald’s. It is happening in the wake of the war between Hamas and Israel, which flared up again in October.

Starbucks, like several other big brands, has recently received criticism and been accused of taking sides in the conflict.
