The Health Insurance Board has confirmed that the updated Basic Health Insurance Document includes the costs of examining for diabetes mellitus and dispensing devices to patients in accordance with approved standards.
He explained that this document covers an insulin pump, glucose analyzers, a specialized health care plan, as well as a comprehensive diabetes care plan and visits to ophthalmologists, kidney, foot, heart, psychiatry and surgery when needed.
He noted that patients with type 1 diabetes should get an external source of insulin regularly as prescribed by their doctor, noting that studies have shown that gestational diabetes is one of the factors that cause type 2 diabetes.
Regarding the prevention of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, the “health insurance” has emphasized that type 2 diabetes can be prevented by following a healthy diet and lifestyle.
