According to The Guardian, it was reported that the stars, which the researchers called “Old Smokers”, were discovered as a result of approximately 10 years of observations with the telescope at the European Southern Observatory (ESO).
As a result of observations, astronomers discovered a group of giant old stars very close to the center of the Milky Way, emitting dust and gas clouds as large as the Solar System, and noted that they remained active for many years and suddenly began to emit large smoke clouds.
‘THEY ARE CLUSTERED VERY CLOSE TO THE CENTER OF THE MILKY WAY GALAXY’
Professor Philip Lucas of the University of Hertfordshire, who led the observations, said: “This is a new type of star and they all appear to be clustered in the same area of the sky, very close to the center of our Milky Way Galaxy.” he said.
Details of the research were published in the journal “Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society”.
