NANCHANG, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) — A team of Chinese paleontologists has discovered fossilized dinosaur bones. which dates back to the Cretaceous period, or about 90 million years ago, and is believed to be a new species of dinosaur that was named “Gandititan cavocaudatus” in later time
Wang Lingyun Deputy Curator of Jiangxi Geology Museum The fossilized dinosaur bones were said to have been discovered at a construction site in Ganxian District, Ganzhou City, east China’s Jiangxi Province. As of June 2021
The museum cooperates with the University of Geosciences of China (Wuhan) and the Jiangxi Institute of Geological Survey and Research. They began joint work on restoring and researching the aforementioned dinosaur bone fossils in the same year.
Han Feng Lu, leader of the project team from the university in Hubei Province, central China The new titanosaurian sauropod is said to be part of the larger titanosaur family. The total fossils discovered account for approximately 40 percent of the skeleton of this dinosaur species. which has completeness and resolution that is considered hard to find in the world
Part of the fossil bones discovered were six segmented cervical vertebrae, two upper vertebrae, and the last vertebrae were intact. along with the first 17 caudal bone joints and part of the right pelvis. This intact spine leads to an estimated total body length of 14 meters, which is relatively small among sauropods.
The discovery was published in the journal Systematic Palaeontology on Jan. 17 and has important implications for studying the evolution and paleogeographic distribution of dinosaurs. This species dates back to the Cretaceous period.
