Newly Constructed Volleyball Court in Prapoil Town Revives Interest in the Sport

25 January 2024, 02:00 AM IST Volleyball court constructed in Prapoil

Cherupuzha: During 1980-95, volleyball competition was the most popular in the hills. There were many big and small tournaments where local teams were tearing up the field. Tournaments with numbered players and outside players were a celebration. A volleyball court was prepared two weeks ago in Prapoil Town to connect the new generation to volleyball even though the old days cannot be restored. Six local residents worked behind this.

These are five people and Murali

The volleyball court was made a reality by five former players and Murali, a resident of the area. The court opened 15 days ago near Prapoil Town is now full of players. The audience is also slowly gathering. Former state athlete M. Aliyarukutty, ex-player of Indian Army Saji Joseph, Siju Manimandiram, P. Nidhish Prapoil and P. Dhanesh met Murali at Muthuwadham premises and asked for permission to build a volleyball court at the town’s premises. When Murali said that he did not want any rent, the court was built by spending around one lakh rupees.

They have decided to make a floodlit court by spending some more money. Coaching camp, small tournament and reunion of old players are all in their mind. Increasing lifestyle diseases and misguided youth brought them to the idea of court.

A glorious time in memory

Those evenings were spent around the volleyball court when TV and cricket were not popular. The strength of the players was the crowd that came around. Each day, the players who come will be divided into two teams and bet for a ‘single tea’, while the spectators will take the bet.

Spectators and players dwindled as people turned to cricket and TV. Due to the huge financial burden on regional tournaments, the organizers also withdrew. With that, volleyball slowly came down from the hill.
