Newfoundland dogs trained in water rescue, for fun

The association “Terre-Neuve au travail 21” regularly trains its dogs at Lake Kyr near Dijon (Côte-d’Or). Despite its name, the association also welcomes dogs of different breeds.

That day we have an appointment at Lake Kyr. We asked if we could come, accompanied by Muffin, the Golden Retriever dog from the show “In Animal Land”. A dog that doesn’t have much to do with the huge and magnificent Newfoundland dogs present there, except for a certain taste for swimming. And the answer of Isabelle Procyk, the president of the association “Newfoundland at Work 21” was without appeal.

In the club, we welcome dogs of all breeds as long as they are sociable with others. The idea being to share good times together and the passion for water and animals.

When we arrived, a dozen dogs and their masters were present. After a little coffee and some information on the progress of the session, the first dog is put in the water. In fact, it is the master who will be wet first. Embarked on a boat, the master moves away from the edge and throws himself into the water.

On the bank, an assistant holds the dog and encourages it to remain attentive to its master, and when the master falls into the water, he encourages the animal to swim to its master.

In the water, the owner of the dog is agitated, calls his animal and stimulates it by showing one of his toys. If the dog comes up to him, he congratulates him, gives him his toy and clings to the flotation harness with which the animal is equipped. It is thus, towed by his imposing companion, that the master reaches the shore.

All dogs can do it, the main thing is to act gently, through play and patience. The Newfoundland dog is only much more powerful in bringing a person back to dry land.

A little later, a Swiss member threw herself into the water with her “mongrel” dog, according to her own words. A dog that will not demerit. It is only the third time that he has come to training, and he has just passed the exercise without difficulty.

I’m so proud of him, he’s a bastard, a simple bastard, and yet he did perfectly well, after only three sessions, it’s great what’s happening here.

Agnès, member of the association

At the end of the training, all the dogs present will have been put in the water, even our dog Golden who did not hesitate to go offshore to pick me up (to discover on Saturday April 9 at 11:25 a.m. on France3 Bourgogne-Franche-Comté ). An astonishing and moving experience that shows how great the love of animals for their masters is.

Dogs who train with their owners, just for fun. Neither the masters nor the dogs are intended to intervene in a real emergency situation. Training is only a hobby, where humans and their animals live together a real moment of happiness.
