Newcastle have connected a real grip in the big meeting with Liverpool.
In the 25th minute, Anthony Gordon gave the home team the lead.
Then Virgil van Dijk had to see the red card after bringing down Alexander Isak.
Liverpool are currently visiting Newcastle at St James’ Park. After just under half an hour, the visitors found themselves in a really tough situation – as they ended up at a goal and numerical disadvantage.
First, Liverpool-born Anthony Gordon gave the home side the lead in the 25th minute after a major blunder by Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Newcastle striker thanked for the free position and surely made it 1-0 for the Magpies.
And barely before the guests had recovered from the late goal, it was time for the next slap.
Isak in the hot air
This time it was Virgil van Dijk who was the big culprit when he brought down Alexander Isak just outside his own penalty area.
Referee John Brooks then chose to draw the red card – to the guests’ wild protests.
Even Viaplay’s expert, Glenn Strömberg, thought that the direct expulsion was questionable.
– I think it was hard, he says in the broadcast.
Shortly after the sending off, Newcastle had a great opportunity to increase to 2–0, but Alisson was saved by the crossbar.
