Newcastle United won in the 10th round of the Premier League. At St James’ Park, the hosts quite unexpectedly defeated London’s Arsenal 1-0. For the first time in over a month, Eddie Howe’s team won three points in the league, and their rivals fell into a hole in the Premier League.
A successful midweek for both teams
The biggest winner of the 1/8-final match of the Carabao Cup (English League Cup) against Preston North End in the Arsenal team was Jakub Kiwior, who has not been getting good results lately. The Pole scored two assists in a 3-0 win. Despite a good performance in the cup and Riccardo Calafiori’s injury, coach Mikel Arteta did not find Kiwior’s place in the starting 11 for the upcoming Premier League match against Newcastle United.
Newcastle United, on the other hand, advanced to the quarter-finals of the English League Cup after winning 2-0 at home against Arsenal’s derby rival, Chelsea. Three days earlier, the Magpies lost in the league to the Blues. Coach Eddie Howe wanted his team to get back to winning ways in the Premier League. Their series without a win in the PL is five matches in a row.
One blow for the lead
In the opening minutes, the visiting players were more dangerous. This was especially visible in the 11th minute when Bukayo Saka shot into the side net. A minute later, Newcastle United fans were euphoric. Alexander Isak converted a precise cross from Anthony Gordon to open the scoring.

Two plays from the wings looked quite dangerous. Gordon on one side and Saka on the other created a threat, but neither player from their team finished the attack. In the 27th minute, chaos ensued after a corner for Arsenal. Mikel Merino’s shot was blocked by Lewis Hall.
The first half was played at a good pace, but viewers could not see many dangerous situations. The Londoners’ attacks were in vain because the hosts defended well. However, Howe’s team looked like a well-organized team, but did not push the pace.
Lots of possession, not much action
Joe Willock’s shot could be considered the first interesting opportunity in the second half. The hosts’ player won the duel with William Saliba. The Englishman hit the top of the goal, but David Raya was on duty and directed the ball to a corner kick. He scored the first goal in the 63rd minute Isak he hit hard from afar. However, the Arsenal goalkeeper was on duty. A minute later, the guests scored the first shot in the second half of the match. The ball, after Declan Rice’s shot and Fabian Schär’s block, narrowly missed Nick Pope’s post.
Arsenal had a bad day at Newcastle. It’s hard to accuse “The Gunners” of lack of commitment or willingness to score a goal. Flanking attacks rarely brought danger. However, the Magpies had a shot on goal at the end of the match. The ball from Joelinton’s header found its way into Raya’s gloves.

Rice had the “ball for the draw” in added time of the second half. The England representative won the aerial duel in the opponents’ penalty area. Instead of directing the ball into the net, the midfielder shot wide of the goal. The guests had only one shot on target in the entire match, which is a sufficient comment on the offensive displays of the English runners-up.
The win moved Newcastle United to eighth place in the table, while Arsenal FC is third. Arteta’s team fell into a hole. The third league match in a row without a win is not a good result for a team dreaming of winning the Premier League.
