Kalvin Phillips (28) is joining West Ham United, the club announced on Friday. Therefore, Newcastle has to look elsewhere in its search for a new midfielder – and has set its sights on a former Bayern professional.

Newcastle United are desperately looking for a new midfielder because coach Eddie Howe (46) has to do without Joelinton, Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson due to injury. In addition, Sandro Tonali (23) will be missing for several months due to a ban as a result of a betting scandal.

So far, Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City has always been considered the Magpies’ preferred candidate, but the Englishman has joined West Ham United. The Londoners announced this on Friday morning – meaning Newcastle have to look elsewhere and apparently have a former Bayern player in their sights.

Newcastle prefer a loan deal

As consistent English media reports, the current 10th-placed team in the Premier League is interested in Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (28) from Tottenham Hotspur. The Dane can leave Spurs if he receives a suitable offer, as he has lost his regular place under Spurs coach Ange Postecoglou (58).

The 28-year-old has made 20 appearances this season, but has mostly only been a substitute or substitute when another player is unavailable. In addition to Newcastle’s injury problems, there are problems with the English league’s Financial Fair Play – Everton were penalized with a ten point deduction for violations.

Newcastle wanted to sign Højbjerg as early as 2022

To avoid this, the Magpies will have to save money and can reportedly only afford to take Højbjerg on loan. The Danish international is no stranger to Newcastle. He is said to have been on the list for the club from the north-east of England as early as spring 2022.

It is still unclear whether Spurs will agree to a loan deal. Højbjerg moved from Southampton FC to the Londoners in the summer of 2020 for almost 17 million euros and was always set until this season. His contract runs until summer 2025.
